Writing a textbook means creating a specific tool - generally rich in content - with the purpose of conveying competences and knowledge. First of all, it is necessary to make the student/reader understand the logical thread that links all the topics in a specific sequence. The table of contents is the business card of your textbook: the more accurate and detailed the content organization, the clearer the structure. In this way, the reader/student will easily browse through, while studying, revising or just consulting the book.
In order to facilitate focus and learning, where possible, subdivide the content into logic units. This means not only subdividing chapters into paragraphs and subparagraphs, but also including a series of tools such as the executive summary. This tool briefly summarises, also through bullet points, the topics discussed in the chapter. It is very useful to study the chapters one by one.
Describing statements and citing scholars and researches about the same topics is essential for a valuable and updated textbook. However, do not forget that too many notes may make the reading process more tiring. For editorial conventions, please choose the American citation system which consists in writing, in the text and between parenthesis, the surname of the author, the year of publication, and eventually the page of the citation or of the concept. You will use notes only to explain concepts that are not included in the text or in the boxes. Please, make sure your referencing is accurate and verified: all the references within the text should be reported in an exhaustive referencing section. For more detailed information, please see the instructions for professional and technical publications, paragraph 17 ‘references’.
Verifying the learning level, can be extremely useful for the reader/student, most of all before an exam. At the same time, it is an opportunity for the author/professor to understand if their writing is clear and effective. To do so, authors can access the FRANCO ANGELI ONLINE TEST tool.
This platform is available in the Multimedia area, as well as in the University Area and it allows for the creation of tests and questionnaires having the following characteristics:
