The essay investigates the centrality of the theme of choice by questioning three authors who have made it the focus of their reflections: Pascal, Høffding, Kierkegaard. If the Pascalian pari reread by Lucien Goldmann in the light of the Hegelian-Marxist dia¬lectic, therefore transformed into «an individual and social activity of the subject», brings out the constitutive problematic nature of history, the figure of «leap», elaborated by Kier¬ke¬gaard and Høffding as a question that affects the existence of the individual, draws at¬tention to the paradox of freedom of choice, the unexplored foundation of man.
