In contemporary society the eddying succession of objects, persons, situations leads to relationships with others being lived in a contracted time. Sentiments therefore have a short time for being developed and deepened. And because of that, in interchanges the affective logic of substitution prevails that produces a kind of dispersion of the experience with grave repercussions on the structure of the Self. Perhaps, in this context, the invitation of Plato can be precious: for containing the erosive force of time lived in that way, we need to make use of study and of memory. The author maintains that, in respect to an identity which is precipitously transient, produced by mass education, personal education can constitute a bulwark to the dispersion and a possibility for a more solid structuring of the Self and of human relationships.
