This re-reading of Freud’s essay ‘Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego, places Freud’s fundamental theses on social ties in the general context of his later thought, linking it in particular to the simultaneous opposition and/or solidarity of Eros (love, life) and Thanatos (hatred, death). Rejecting the current interpretation of Freud as a ‘theoretician bound to drives’, who would conceive the unconscious in individualistic terms, the author on the contrary sheds light on how Freud’s conceptualization always implies an essential reference to the Other and to its figures. Hence he has recourse to figures inspired by mathematical functions to illustrate the conceptual link which renders Freud’s theorizing understandable. In particular, the author attempts to re-read Freud’s enigmatic passages on the function of the ‘assassination of the primordial father’ as a constitutive event of any social tie among humans.
