Il volume raccoglie i saggi critici che illustrano i risultati del progetto THERME (Thermal Heritage for Ecosustainable Regeneration, Mobility and Economy), che ha inteso sviluppare un protocollo metodologico per valorizzare territori a rischio, utilizzando risorse naturali e culturali. Gli impianti termali, anche se non di alto valore artistico, sono stati identificati come hub per una rete integrata che promuove rigenerazione territoriale e turismo sostenibile.

In October 1993, the first Bachelor’s Degree Program in Industrial Design in Italy was inaugurated at Politecnico di Milano. This volume – Issue Zero – launches a publishing initiative that, grounded in a reflection on the historical memory and cultural roots of Politecnico di Milano’s Design System, aims to sustain the distinctive forward-looking spirit of Polytechnic design culture. Its goal is to place design at the service of today’s cultural, social, technological, and environmental challenges.

The QUESTION OF ALTERITY has become fundamental to understanding contemporary societies, which are increasingly multicultural, multiethnic and intersectional. Today, it is legitimate to think that the design dimension can also undertake research paths that highlight THE NEED TO RECOGNISE THE OTHER: from migratory flows to gender cultures, from social fragility to mental health, from cultural distances to the difficulties of social integration, etc. This is the direction in which the essays in this volume are heading.

Polis is understood in a very broad sense: living together in a complex world and society where all differences can find a way to coexist, where there is conviviality, good politics and active citizenship, as well as personal and shared responsibility arising from concern for the common good. Ecology and arts based research can provide a framework for individual and collective learning, with the aim of defining and constructing an inclusive and sustainable polis.

Le politiche ambientali europee stanno promuovendo una transizione dall’attuale economia lineare verso un’economia circolare, che mira a ridurre i rifiuti e l’estrazione di materie prime. Per realizzare questa transizione, il settore edilizio risulta prioritario, in quanto a livello europeo, è responsabile di circa il 50% dell’estrazione totale di materie prime e del 37,5% della produzione totale di rifiuti. Il libro restituisce i fondamenti dell’economia circolare: 1) gestione delle risorse materiche e dei rifiuti; 2) progettazione per la reversibilità; 3) organizzazione di modelli gestionali di circolarità e relazioni tra gli operatori della filiera.
