Using the interview Mario Rosa gave to Niccolò Guasti (Società e storia 2020) as an autobiographical source and combining this with a survey of the works of the late historian who passed away on December 24, 2022, this article considers Rosa’s intellectual biography in relation to the historiographical trends of his time and to the history of the scholarly institutions he collaborated with. The Scuola Normale di Pisa and the Dizionario Biografico shaped his profile as a historian interested in both the religious history of the early modern period and the history of culture. Of crucial importance were Rosa’s entry into the university as a lecturer and his meeting with Pasquale Villani who included him into the team of the Atlante storico italiano and into the editorial staff of Quaderni storici. Ecclesiastical institutions, the Roman curia, erudition in the République des Lettres, the Catholic Enlightenment, Jansenism but also religious sensibility were recurring themes in his output over the last decades. His participation in different scholarly strands – involving some of the liveliest historiographical debates – points to Rosa as one of the most important and original figures of Italian historiography between the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
