Mainly based on primary, printed, and institutional sources, the article describes the evolution of public debate on the links between gangmastering and the entering of migrant labor in rural Southern Italy, between the end of the Sixties and the mid-Nineties. By drawing on scientific research, daily and periodical press articles, and parliamentary documents, the author outlines how the exploitation of agricultural labor became intertwined with immigration, notably in the Mezzogiorno region. The article focuses on the trade unions and institutions’ growing awareness of labor exploitation in agriculture.
