Our experience with patients suffering from schizophrenia, who stay in a psychiatric rehabilitation facility and others belonging to its day centre, highlights the importance of an integrated treatment in order to detect an improvement in their functioning and quality of life. The planning of interventions is carried out with the collaboration of the multidisciplinary team, composed by a psychiatrist, psychologistpsychotherapist, psychiatric rehabilitation technician, nurses and social-health workers. Psychotherapy, in this reality, takes on a central role as it tries to focus on the personal meanings with which the patient interprets the events, belonging both to his life history and to his current situation, meanings that can be obtained from his representations. We will see how cognitive psychotherapy is structured in theoretical terms and its application in the rehabilitation field. In rehabilitation, psychotherapy starts a process that starts from the patient’s awareness of his own condition, from the evaluation and development of his willingness to change, through active involvement on his part. Support in the acquisition of new skills, and in the improvement of those partially mastered, they allow him to proceed towards achieving his needs and objectives, therefore improving the quality of his life.
Keywords: cognitive psychotherapy; rehabilitation; schizophrenia; social skills; metacognitive competence.
