The article analyses the interaction between citizenship construction processes and health practices within health services characterised by a collective and communitarian practice of medicine. The research was carried out in two Centres de santé communautaires in France using qualitative techniques. After a focus on the concept of health citizen-ship and on the health conditions of migrants in France, we proceed to study the repertoires of contention and the organisational aspects of the health centres. The analysis revealed how the formal and substantial dimensions of citizenship coexist and intertwine in health practices. The centres’ initiatives include struggles and negotiations for the for-mal recognition of the right to health, the provision of a health service and the construction of participatory processes for patients with a mi-grant background. Health becomes a sphere of recognition and partici-pation and at the same time a vehicle for integration and participation.
