The article describes some potential evolutionary mechanisms that have been experienced by firms in industrial districts. In particular, we focus on acquisition-driven and branddriven mechanisms, which can bring important changes in the local socio-economic structure of the district. Our reflection is grounded in an empirical case, which relate to the historical footwear district of Riviera del Brenta, in which the two mechanisms seem to coexist.
