To guarantee equal living and working conditions is to comply with the principles of Western democracies and the European treaties, which even provide for improvements to the conditions of European citizens. What we see happening in liquid modernity, on the other hand, is a marked erosion of such safeguards: the social and economic condition of people who derive their income from work and the degree of legal protection they enjoy have deteriorated seriously, especially in the last fifteen years. Flexibility and a light hand in the field of work produce serious social contradictions that take the form of a gradual and unrelenting deterioration in the level of safeguards governing job security and workers’ physical and mental safety in the workplace. Finally, the author stresses the creeping legitimisation of precarious working relationships and the excessive use of downgraded and underpaid jobs masquerading as apparent self-employment that fail to comply with respect for the working individual’s human dignity and professionalism
