The paper investigates the long-run growth behaviour in the Middle East and North Africa, with the aim to verify the presence and type of convergence in the region during the period 1950-2007. Methods and Results Empirical work shows that the vast and heterogeneous area analyzed in the last sixty years experienced a process of weak convergence. The analysis is performed through the application of the - and the -convergence approaches. Conclusions. The economic variables that play a substantial role for the convergence are: the initial conditions of development, the degree of international openness and the policies of government intervention. The improvement of governance factors, such as actions to reduce corruption, greater reliability and efficiency of government, greater political stability and violence reduction, play a role in stimulating productive activity in the long run, moving up the path of the steady-state.
