Childhood: current political problem of a changing society In order to remember Eustachio Loperfido (who died in Bologna, Italy, on March 23, 2008), parts of a paper he wrote in Psicoterapia e Scienze Umane in 1969 (vol. 3, no. 10, pp. 1-9) are reprinted, preceded by a brief introduction by Gabriele Vezzani. Eustachio Loperfido criticizes the political choices of those years on themes such as family, school, and city planning, in the perspective of a society that is more respectful towards childhood’s needs. He analyzes in depth the evolution from patriarchal family to nuclear family, the school system’s authoritarian structure, and the alienating aspects of some urban areas. He suggests alternatives that are more respectful of the child’s needs and aiming at a better participation. Although this paper was written forty years ago, it is still valid for its cultural and political ideals, and because it exemplifies Max Weber’s conception of the function of the scientist and of the intellectual.
