In a historical period the inability of the world-system to contain space within the territorial logic of nation-states is evident, and in which planetary crisis challenge human survival, this article reflects on the need to recover cosmopolitanism in academic debate within the field of geography. Engaging with feminist, post-structuralist and post- and decolonial approaches, the first section discusses recent proposals for rethinking planetary conviviality in the era of neoliberal globalization. The second section, on the one hand, defines cosmopolitanism from a critical-geographical perspective, tracing its origins in the cartographic representation of the globe from above, and on the other, connects it to David Harvey’s geographical theory relating it to the ‘spaces of cosmopolitanism’. The third section concludes the essay proposing some final considerations on the relevance of cosmopolitanism.
