Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) viene spesso descritto come uno dei massimi esponenti del pensiero marxista in materia di geografia e ruolo dell’urbano nel capitalismo. Allo ‘spazio astratto’ del capitalismo, dedicato al valore di scambio, Lefebvre contrapponeva lo ‘spazio differenziale’, il trionfo del valore d’uso e quella che in seguito sarebbe stata chiamata giustizia spaziale. Tuttavia, per essere un concetto utile a una lotta per il superamento del capitalismo, lo spazio differenziale deve essere in grado di contribuire ai processi decisionali in un’ampia varietà di contesti urbani in rapida evoluzione. Tra queste decisioni figurano quelle che comportano una mediazione tra spazio differenziale presente e futuro. In tale contesto si rende necessario ricorrere a metodi di attualizzazione; si creano dunque i presupposti per considerare nella discussione e nell’analisi dello spazio differenziale sia i vantaggi che i problemi associati all’applicazione pratica dei metodi in questione.
