The first person pronoun, «I», allows the people to place themselves in the center of the reality and to give it a shape and a meaning. Autobiographical writing uses this pronoun to interrupt the automatisms of the author’s self-image and to deepen his self consciousness. The autobiographer’s path is open, unpredictable, and it does not have a precise finishing line. He does not seek a historical truth, but his goal is to accept the inner suffering in order to elaborate it, to modify the defenses and the representation of himself and of the other people. The defensive I, usually used as a mask to the others and to himself, is replaced by a reflective, critical, multi-purposes I.
