The article focuses on the role of inter-organizational relationships for the innovation in ports, privileged areas for the advancement of knowledge on the generation and management of innovation within complex networks. To this end, the paper proposes a framework of analysis of logistics innovation in seaports; in particular, three service supply chains are considered that reflect, to different degrees, the importance of the seaport in the process of innovation through an increasingly complex set of services, the involvement of a growing number of specialized actors and the use and combination of a broader typology of resources. Some practical examples are suggested, that witness the importance of collaborative innovation in an increasing number of European ports. A set of policy actions are proposed that rely on an active role of the Port Authority, both as entrepreneur and/or facilitator, in the development and diffusion of logistics innovation with respect to the current and potential interactions among port actors along the service supply chains. Finally, future research directions and some managerial implications for the development of innovation in seaports are addressed.
