This paper deals with Raymond Buyse’s thought, often seen as the founding figure of Europe’s experimental pedagogy. His intellectual legacy is explored through the analysis of his most influential work, L’expérimentation en pédagogie (1935), and his scientific and teaching activities both inside and outside academia. The key argument is that Buyse did not shy away from his era’s challenges, successfully integrating the debate on methods within the broader discussion of educational goals. Ninety years after its main publication, some of his ideas may seem outdated. However, a renewed examination of his work still provides valuable insights for today’s discussions on experimental pedagogy, its scope, and its connection to the whole pedagogy.
