The publication of a volume of selected papers, grouped around major interest areas, is an important milestone in the development of a collaboration between Italian and Hungarian psychology. From this book also emerges a new dimension of Eastern European psychology, which overcomes the methodological limits of the widespread behaviouristic approach, and recovers a previously abandoned middle European theoretical heritage. The Hungarian essays in cognition, personality development and theory show the importance of this link with that social and historical tradition of psychology from which the same Freudian school was born. This volume presents the new trends in Italian psychology as well: they are projected towards an organic theory of cognition and of social representation. This is well shown by the theoretical essays of some of the foremost Italian psychologists contributing to this work, and by the plenty of experimental evidence reported in other studies.

The collected essays have been organized in four major conceptual areas:

- Cognition, mental imagery, voluntary control, information processing, modification of primary visual processes and recognition;

- Language, concepts formation and personality in the perspective of developmental psychology;

- Modes of social representation and of categorization in prosocial behavior, interpersonal relations and the formation of stereotypes;

- Psychology of literature, with particular reference to the study of characters in Eastern European literature.
