The article analyses the strengths and drawbacks of the work of history teachers in Italian secondary schools in the framework of the Italian laws and debate of the last 25 years, which oscillate between very different, sometimes irreconcilable positions. The reflection intends to suggest some solutions to relaunch the centrality of the discipline in school education.
