The study of the processes that shaped Latin Christianity during the central centuries of the Middle Ages cannot be separated from an analysis of the theological and canonical definitions that contributed to the clarification and consolidation of the image of papal power. The author reexamines these developments by considering how, alongside the formulation of this ideological framework, a corresponding one was constructed concerning the functions and positions of the cardinals within the structures of the Roman Church. By following a chronological path and examining the thought of some of the key figures in the history of top ecclesiastical institutions from the 11th to the early 13th century, the paper attempts to contextualize the construction of this cardinal imaginary.
