In the middle of the 1830s the careful reading of a then successful book by Edward Lytton Bulwer, England and the English, inspired the young Cattaneo to write, in english language, a long, demanding essay. Entitled An unenglish appendix to Mr. B.’s England and the English, this essay was left unfinished by the author and remained unpublished till the middle of past century. The present article aims to focus the role played by the reading of the above-mentioned book - included the appendices written anonymously by J.S. Mill - in the formation of Cattaneo’s historical and philosophical thought.
