There is a dearth of data on doping among non-professional athletes. In this article we will present the findings of a web survey aimed at investigating the use of licit and illicit substances in a sample of adult amateur athletes. In particular, the purpose of this study is to investigate doping patterns and to compare the profiles of athletes who do not use performance-enhancing drugs with those who use them. On the basis of our main findings, in the final section we will discuss the pharmacologization of sport, the social representation of athletes who dope as "bad eggs", and the effectiveness of anti-doping rules.
