The author synthetically revisits the story of psychoanalytical thinking on psychological development highlighting a few of its basic epistemic assumptions. The concept of emergence is then introduced as it derives from the theories of dynamic and non-linear complex systems along with the purview of post- Darwinian evolutionary thinking with particular reference to the theory of punctuated equilibrium of Gould and Eldredge. This gives rise to a novel synthesis through which we can look at psychological development, not only in children but also in each individual along their life span.
Keywords: Psychological development, emergence, punctuated evolution, life span, dynamic and non-linear complex systems, linear dynamics
