The presence of the "Great War" on the Net leaves the observer immediately surprised because of its size and different expressions. The traumatic experience of the Twentieth Century (the start of the "short century" of the world wars) finds on Internet a space appropriate to the modernity of the conflict and to multimedia and hypertext of the World Wide Web. The author identifies himself with a Net user interested in the history of the First World War and follows his ideal search in order to analyse the sources of information and documentation provided by the Web. The author focuses his attention on Google and Wikipedia and in particular on the links between the search engine and the encyclopedia. He appreciates their services but also sees the problems arising from the use of these resources. The article ends with an examination of online lists of websites (directories and portals) related to the First World War. The author recognizes their importance as a guide to a proper use of the Web.
